Mind over Fatter

24 October 2007
Venue: Encore
Review by: Rene Bonzet

As jy alleen is, dors is, of harseer is, moenie eet nie.  ‘n Goeie oefening om te doen is:  Sit jou hand op jou kop, jou keel, jou hart en laastens jou maag en vra jouself telkemale af of daardie deel van jou liggaam honger is.

Cari het aan almal ‘n gratis “Mind over Fatter”-sessie aangebied; daar is tans ook geleentheid om betrokke te raak as aanbieder van hierdie sessies. Haar besigheidskaartjie lees soos volg:

“Mind over Fatter is a non-diet alternative to losing weight naturally and feeling comfortable in your own skin.  It gives you the practical tools to lose weight from the inside out without crazy pills, powders, potions and meal plans.  Stop putting your life on hold until you reach some magical number on a scale.  To find a group in your area, visit their website: www.mindoverfatter.co.za

Golf Day

Saturday, 3 November 2007
Golf Fanatics
Review by: various ladies who attended

"Despite the sore arms (and bruised ego due to my questionable talents as a golfer), I thought the golf clinic was amazing.  What a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning - not only acquiring a new skill (though I'm not sure that I can refer to my swing as a skill), but relaxing in the company of such interesting women."

Zahida Ebrahims, ENS

"It was a very good session. The instructors were encouraging and motivating, even if one felt like an absolutely inadequate dumbo. I really had fun and would highly recommend the session. By the end, I could see myself as a potential golfer!"

Noloyiso Mahlakahlaka (CA) SA, PricewaterhouseCoopers - Southern Africa

"The clinic was fun and interesting. I had never held a golf club before and was worried and nervous about how it would go.  The presentation by the pros was great and they were great with nervous beginners such as myself.I enjoyed it so much that I have decided to sign-up for lessons early next year."

Phumeza Mgxashe, Table Mountain Parks Board

"It was definitely worth the R450 as after the assistance that I received from Lisa, my swing already improved.  That is what makes a PRO so special, the fact that they can pick up on all the little mistakes and the way they go about to correct and iron these things out.  After Saturday I am more confidant that and know that I do have the potential to be a golfer, I will just need a few lessons with the gals but I will book that in the New Year."

Thanks to you all for a brilliant day!!!!

Amanda  Cilliers

"Thank you for a fantastic golf clinic on Saturday. For those of you that were unable to attend, you really missed out. It was awesome to see so many enthusiastic, aspiring new golfers. A lot of fun was had by all! Lisa and Sherri gave us brilliant tuition. I have just finished playing in the Supersport Golf Day today, and there was a dramatic improvement in my game. I had greater confidence in my ability and was able to put all the skills I learnt on Saturday into practise, resulting in one of the better rounds I have had in a long time. It would be fabulous to have more of these clinics in future, I will definitely be there."

Tracey Gordon, Business Presentation Group

This Saturday's Golf clinic provided all the magic ingredients that all the BWA encounters that I have attended normally provide. It was above all an engaging learning experience, and although our focus this time was on a tiny ball, it provided loads of laughter and enjoyment. The golf Female Pro Golfers, Lisa and Cherry successfully incorporated experienced players and golf " maidens" like myself and engaged us all with equal individual attention. Lastly , as with all BWA occasions, I met inspiring women from diverse fields and the camaraderie of learning and playing provided a warmth that  cold drizzly Cape Town weather couldn't deter.

Life's a Pitch

Thursday, 20 September 2007
Graduate School of Business
Review by: Adine Perel, Bottom Line Hospitality

The function was fantastic and brilliantly presented. I am exceptionally pleased I have joined BWA because functions like this keep me in touch with what amazing people and companies are out there. The presentation was informative and very practical. Presenting to clients is a huge part of my business and now I can get the clients even more passionate and excited about my business. We laughed almost the entire two and a half hours as the presenter had an amazing sense of humour. The skill involved of putting the presentations together is very clever and intuitive. I have and will recommend any company who requires presentations to be put together to use BPG as there is a large value for money because if one can put their point across the first time there will be no need for a second time and the product or service is sold

Know the Rule

Monday, 27 August 2007
PWC offices
Review by: Nina Joubert, PWC

It is always amazing to realise that we, as woman, are battling with the same dilemmas, issues and fears. This is what was discovered at the “know the rule” event held in August.

The “rule” is simple:

  • Recognise
  • Understand
  • Liberate
  • Experience

The practicality of the “rule” was explored through discussing our fears in small groups. Initially we all recognised our fears and then we attempted to understand them.

Although we only had opportunity to explore the first two elements due to time constraints, it was tremendous to see how all who were there discussed, shared experiences and opened themselves up to each other. Such workshops are definitely worth while attending as one will always leave with valuable practical tools as well as buckets of inspiration.

Spring Makeover High Tea

Thursday, 6 September
Winchester Mansions Hotale Sea Point
Review by: Sue Milne, Milne & Associates

BWA members were enticed out of their wintry woes to a somewhat chilly Spring day, incidentally the Brazilian Day celebrations, by donning their “fun” hats!

Creativity abounded from Met extravaganzas to pill box and beach hats stapled with flowered frenzy (of the real and artificial kind).  Adding some grace was a wide brimmed antique period hat adorned with lace and roses which, with the wearer, had gently boated down the Thames in days when this was truly fashionable.

Styles ranged from what was described as “pastor’s wife” (Ferose mentioned “dominee”) to Cape Flats specials to the absolutely zany and ridiculous.  Had we been in costume members might have been accused of being at a Mad Hatter’s Tea party. The long awaited prizes went to Petra Krusche of Jan S. de Villiers and to Camilla Macdowell of Constantia Woods Estate

And High Tea it was with flowing champagne and apple juice as an alternative to tea.  Winchester Mansions treated us to fresh scones, strawberry jam and cream, delicate smoked salmon sandwiches and a variety of petite fours of the finest kind.

Not having read the small print, I arrived sans hat and was told that only those with hats could eat the delicious spread! So in a flash I was off to the tourist trap of the Hotel Boutique where Panama hats were on offer at R450 a piece.  This being the case, I frantically settled for a silk scarf which I wound around my head in haphazard 20’s style.

Now what would tear a group of extra stressed business women away from the very horizons of their busy desks?  The draw card, of course, was none other that Anneline Black and her make-up assistant, Yolande Buitendag from Brush Strokes Make-up Studio.  Anneline, the doyenne in make-up artistry in the film and fashion world, charmingly demonstrated modern technique in the application of make-up which is about enhancing your own features rather than show casing make-up. With just 3 basics colours (matt shadows) consisting of a shading, a highlighting and a framing colour for brows and eyes it is possible to do one’s entire face and move from “ordinary to extraordinary”.  “Less is more” was the order of the day in contrast to the dramatic colour and over painted faces of the 60’s and 70’s. Let’s hope the leopards of these eras can change their spots?

Thanks go to the BWA Committee and Cheryl for organising such a fun-filled late afternoon session where members let their hair down, laughed unreservedly, showed the true meaning of “camaraderie” and enjoyed a very informative and much needed lesson.

And the cherry on the top – each member was presented with a voucher to experience a personal make-over.  Our motto will be “To a new wonderful me!”.And Anneline, if “subtly sensational” is the name of the game, I am sure many of us will be hammering at your door in search of the illusive more!

National Credit Act

Wednesday, 8 August 2007
Winchester Mansions
Review by Alison Maytham

On Wednesday morning the day that the Metropole police decided to sabotage operations in our city 15 determined women met at the Winchester Mansions to learn about the National Credit Act.

Desima Beukes Senior Director of VanderSpy Attorneys in Cape Town spent two hours educating us on the implication of the National Credit Act which came into effect on the 1 June 2007.  We had a thoroughly enjoyable morning with loads of discussion and debate surrounding the implications of the Act.  The most critical being registering as a credit provider should you run a business with creditors in excess of R500 000.00.  The Act essentially protects consumers from being exploited by being over indebted.  It protects suppliers of credit from issuing risky credit and not being able to recover monies or goods and services provided.

Should anyone require further information relating to this Cheryl will gladly put you in contact with Desima or supply you with the information.

Women of Substance

Thursday, 26 July 2007
Vineyard Hotel Newlands
Review by Jane Notten

More than 100 BWA members and their guests attended the Woman of Substance mini conference at the stylish Vinyard Hotel in Cape Town last month. The event was an early Woman’s Day celebration and was designed to give busy working women a morning out of the ordinary. Starting with an elegant and delicious breakfast, the day was peppered with small pampering moments woven between more serious addresses from a number of inspirational speakers. Dr Eve kicked off proceedings with a rather rambling but entertaining muse on “Are men really necessary” which had us questioning whether America’s decision to invade Iraq was really as a result of George Bush’s raging hormones!

She was followed by talks from Dr Apffelstaedt, who properly terrified all present with cautionary tales about what not to do if you want to avoid breast cancer, Storm in a G Cup founder Isla Lovell who spoke about a cheerier aspect of breasts – notably how to make them look their best by buying the right kind of bra, and Suzanne Annenberg, MD of Exact who shared her journey to the top with the audience.

On a more emotional note Tertia Albertyn, author of So Close shared her story of her quest to conceive through a staggering 9 in vitro fertilisations, and a BWA member bravely shared her story of her abuse as a child and how she had transcended that. I am sure there was not a dry eye in the house!

The morning was concluded with Champagne  and a 2-course lunch.

The event was sponsored by Business Partners who took the opportunity to launch their new Women’s Fund a fantastic new vehicle for women to gain access to finance for their businesses.

This is the first time that the BWA has staged and event of this nature – it was mean to compliment the BWA’s other events and move away from an “only business” focus, and look at the whole woman.  Many of the topics came about as a result of a questionnaire which was circulated to members as to what they would like to have. The day was mostly very well received from those who attended and the BWA hopes to make this “Woman of Substance” morning a regular feature on its annual calendar!

Please send any feedback on the event to Cheryl.

What is Life Coaching?

Friday, 11 May 2007
Review by Colleen van Rooyen, Flight SpeciLord Charles Hotel

What is Life Coaching? I am sure this is question we all have asked? Liz Calvert, a Life Coach Consultant gave us insight into this, with one of her opening statements: "Life is to be enjoyed and not endured"

She explained a life coach can help you to get your life on pitch and gave insight on selecting a life coach. Liz categorized people into Introverted thinkers and Extroverted Feelers. If an Introverted thinker you would choose an extroverted feeler to be your life coach.

She told us to recognize what it is in life that we wish to achieve and to find ones limiting assumptions (assumptions you have that stop you from achieving your goal) we then had to establish the opposite of this assumption making this a FREEING ASSUMPTION

My understanding of the course is that if I could recognize what I want to achieve and find my limitations preventing me from achieving this it will free me and my goals will be reached.

Liz kindly offered 3 gift certificates for a 2 hour free life coaching session to the first 3 people to ask. I ensured that I got one and look forward to enjoying life a lot more!

The Science Behind Success

Thursday, 12 April 2007
Winchester Mansions Hotel
Review By: Avryl Machet

I was very excited to have the opportunity to attend the presentation as I am interested in quantum science and was curious about how it affects us personally as well as from a business perspective.

Bruce did not disappoint. In 40 minutes he managed to demonstrate that everything is matter/energy and that this energy responds to human thought and intention. He also showed that everything exists as a possibility, that success depends on one?s mindset and doesn?t have anything to do with one?s circumstances (i.e. whether one is wealthy or not). He spoke to us about the Law of Attraction. Our thoughts are ?things?, that lead us to act in a certain way, thereby attracting experiences which lead us to obtain specific results. Our brain is like a giant magnet and we attract that which we think about most. He said that if you want to know what your mindset (or beliefs/programming) is, then all you have to do look at your life and the results that you?ve produced. They will show exactly what you?ve been thinking and attracting!

He stated that we humans only use approximately 3% of our potential and that we tend to ?paddle upstream? instead of ?going with the flow? of life. It is possible to live an ?effortless life?. It is very important to be grateful for all that is in one?s life and to add value to others? lives as well.

The presentation gave me much food for thought. I left, having learnt that no-one else is responsible for my success or happiness and that it?s all up to me. I am off to ?attract? some wonderful and delicious new experiences!

?There is no way to happiness ? Happiness is the way?

Take The Jump

Friday, 9 March 2007
Onse Rust Guest House
Review by: Ester Bezuidenhout

Businesswomen?s Association meet at Onze Rust

On Friday, 9 March Ester Bezuidenhout of Business Partners gave a presentation to 40 women of the BWA (Businesswomen?s Association?s) Helderberg Branch on the topic: To take the jump ? get in, stay in or get out of your own business?

Risk was explained by examples such as the testing of new ideas and not just assuming that it will be accepted in the market place, fast growth in a business requires more capital and control, and a delayed opening may influence success adversely due to seasonality issues and timing of expansion. Most entrepreneurs under fund their businesses and struggle to get it off the ground or find that the growth of the business is constrained by lack of capital. Business Partners is a risk financier who specializes in the needs of these entrepreneurs.

Tips for the different types of entrepreneurs are the following:

  • For the control freaks ? what you don?t know:
  • Don?t think everything can be controlled.
  • The biggest challenge will be staff (people and personalities differ)
  • Don?t start with too little money and think everything will happen on time
  • Be wary of existing business take-over where business has stagnated

For the impulsive decision makers ? what you don?t know

  • Don?t borrow too much money
  • Do something you have experience in
  • Mass market and small profit margins requires capacity, effort and control
  • Test new ideas first
  • Sales potential is determined by capacity

For the indecisive ?want to be?s? ? how to take action and when
Don?t become a survival entrepreneur ? starting for the wrong reasons or not making money but staying in business. General common business knowledge may not be an accurate reflection of what really happens in an industry

The balance of the presentation touched on how one can evaluate a business idea and how to distinguish between an idea and a real opportunity to make money. Issues to consider are whether it serves a niche market or not, passive income or duplication opportunities and whether someone will buy the business from you. Building an asset or cash flow stream may have different impacts on the future value of the business. Own contribution and security should be in relation to the size of the project and turnover motivation and breakeven compared to get indication of risk.

There are myths about entrepreneurs and woman entrepreneurs in particular, such as woman starting only traditional or small home-run businesses. The truth is that many woman start or take-over all types of businesses and can evaluate and run it successfully. What is important is to know what drives you and to know that social responsibility projects will most probably be part of a successful woman?s business in later years. Many entrepreneurs stress because they have a lack of information in their own businesses, or they struggle to take a decision and rather put it off to later stages. A business also has a life cycle and the demands in each phase will be different ? new, growing or dying businesses each have specific risks and requires different actions from the entrepreneur. An entrepreneur?s career does not necessarily mean starting a new business, but can also involve the take-over of an existing business. Therefore the life stage where the business is has to be taken into account in order to manage the required change forward.

Review by: Caren Willett

On Friday, 9 March, BWA held a successful luncheon function at Onze Rust Guest House and Inspiration Centre in the Helderberg region. The venue was perfect as Onze Rust is situated ?just off the beaten track? and has magnificent scenic views. The tranquil environment gave the feeling of ?getting away? to really absorb and learn. Our guest speaker, Ester Bezuidenhout from Business Partners, spoke about ?Taking the Jump? and how to ?Get in, Stay in or Get out of your own Business?. Ester also had many tips for different types of Entrepreneurs. Esters talk on ?How to distinguish between an idea and real opportunity to make money? was of interest to all. Everyone who attended walked away with a mindful of information as Ester spoke about many interesting aspects of business. There was definitely something for everyone. This function was extremely well attended and successful networking went on till quite late?

The function was partially sponsored by Onze Rust Guesthouse ? owned by Ester Bezuidenhout - a lovely ten bedroom four star facility with huge gardens and a peaceful setting. View it at www.stellenboschstay.com or contact them 021 881 3291.
