The Winning in the Workplace workshop is the only social responsibility event of the BWA Durban and is entirely sponsored enabling disadvantaged schools to attend. The workshop is presented to female Grade 12 learners and aims to provide the "businesswomen of tomorrow" with the skills necessary to make a success of their future entrance into the business world. Learners are invited from schools within Durban and surrounding areas.
The workshop is limited to 300 learners and is an annual function held on 9 August, Women’s Day, every year. It is an all day function, usually starting at 8:00am and finishing 4:00pm.
The day begins with the transportation of the girls from their homes or schools to a conference venue, where they register and then receive tea and refreshments. The learners are requested to write an essay prior to the workshop, and this gets marked during the course of the day by two or three dedicated women academics. The girls are then exposed to a morning of talks ranging from self motivation to managing finances. Lunch is served, followed by more talks and finally the top 10 writers of the essay competitions are announced. In the past, the winners have taken home computers, bursaries, cell phones and books.
Each girl receives a memory bag to commemorate the day. Memory Bags contain small gifts; e.g. stationery, consumer goods, books, accessories, etc. Spot prizes are awarded at various stages throughout the day on completion of participation exercises. These prizes have included travel vouchers, cell phones, personal care hampers, food hampers, books and leather folders.
Please note that the BWA is a registered Non-Profit organisation. Furthermore, all speakers, markers and co-ordinators volunteer their time on 9 August, a public holiday and the project is totally ring-fenced and has its own bank account. The banking details are as follows:
