WOMEN LEADERS IN THE CONNECTION ECONOMY

The Free State & Lesotho Branch had their year-end function on Friday, 24 November. We had a whopping 59 guests attending the event, and even had to turn some bookings away. Alexis Johnstone, BWA committee member, delivered a very interesting presentation with regards to ?Women Leaders in the Connection Economy?. She really gripped the audience with a very interesting presentation.

17 Prizes from different companies was sponsored for the lucky draw at the event and each guest received a handy goody bag with multiple gifts.

BWOYA ROADSHOW

We hosted the BWOYA Roadshow on 9 October, at a lovely river lodge, Kopano Nokeng. We were honoured to have Dr Magau present as well, together with Gloria Serobe and Angela Dick.

We had 55 guests attending the function and both the ladies, Gloria and Angela, gripped the audience with their motivating speeches.

SELF LEADERSHIP

BWA Free State & Lesotho had a function with the theme ?Self Leadership?, on Friday, 15 September at The Terrace restaurant, Oliewenhuis. A finger buffet was served, which was also very well presented.

More about our speaker:

Clinton Massyn is currently the Manager of the Unit for Leadership Studies at the University of the Free State. He worked in the SANDF from 1994 to 2005 after completing National Service.

He has held the following positions:

  • Manager, Unit for Leadership Studies (ULS)
  • Business Plan and Budget Manager
  • Psychologists (Mid Level)
  • Human Resource Management

Clinton has completed high school at Grey College and completed the following degrees:

  • B. Soc Sc. Hons (Psychology)
  • MBA
  • Currently registered for the M.HES (Masters in Higher Education)

Facilitator positions held by him was for the Bridging programme, Career Preparation, Psychology; Bachelor of Management and Leadership (BML); and in the Extended Degree Programme, Numeracy.

COMMUNICATION - HOW LITTLE WE KNOW

We hosted a function on the 25th of August at Aroma Restaurant, Pretty Garden Centre.

More about our speaker:
Our speaker was Lydie Terblanche. Lydie obtained her MA (Communication Science), Cum Laude, in 2004, at the University of the Free State. She supervised various research reports at the Central University of Technology, where she was the study leader (PR exchange students) - from 2002 to 2005.

She also has various teaching experience, ranging from Managing of Media Relations, Information Management, Advanced Advertising, Direct Marketing & Promotions, Business Communication, Public Relations, Communication Issues, Electronic Media, Information Infrastructure, Communication Skills, Organising Effective Conferences & Meetings, Advanced Organisational Communication, Developmental Communication, Ethical Issues in Intercultural Communication and many more!

Lydie also worked on various project editing e.g. Simba, Ponds, Outsurance, KTV and the Metropolitan Odyssey report. She also does translations.

For 8 years she was the Owner / CEO of ZPR & Media Junxion where activities such as PR; Strategic Planning and Implementation; Media Liason; Planning, Analysis & Training; Product Launches: Planning and Execution; Writing Services Communication & Service Audits; Event Management; Promotions; Planning and Implementing Social Responsibility Programs and many more.

She also has vast experience in the Film and TV industry and was the production manager for various programs / sitcoms like the well known "Vetkoekpaleis" and "Lipstiek Dipstiek". Certain French Features also featured.

Her resume contains many more translator, production coordinator, assistant director, transcription, co-writer positions held - to name only a few.

Sylvia Walker, the Market Development Manager from Old Mutual, was our guest speaker.

Since graduating from UCT in 1986 with a B Business Science (Marketing Hons), Sylvia has worked in a number of areas within Old Mutual, focusing on personal financial planning. She is currently responsible for the female market. A major part of her role is to provide financial education to women via face-to-face interactions as well as mass media communications.

Breast cancer changes so many South African women's lives and many are left victims of the disease, primarily through ignorance. Old Mutual's awareness campaign is designed to highlight the disease as well as provide women with information that will allow them to do proper financial planning, so they are not caught short if they should fall pray to breast cancer.

On a personal level, she is a firm believer that each person shapes their own destiny, and that it is every woman's right to triumph over life, no matter what curveball is thrown at us!
 

A Balanced Life for Working Women

The members & guests enjoyed the presentation tremendously and all left with something they could invest within their own lives in a positive way.

Our speaker was Annette Weyers from Fileo Lifestyle Centre. She finished her post graduate degree in Social Work at the University of the Free State, and is currently busy with her master's degree, which includes studies about panic disorder in the multi-generational family. The studies has it's offspring from work she has done on people that were burned-out.

She is a qualified Christian counsellor and is registered with the Association for Christian Counsellors in SA. She also was a lecturer in this field at Filadelfia Training College for two years. For the past two years she has been the owner of Fileo Lifestyle Centre in Bloemfontein, where they mainly focus on stress management for the individual.
