The Suitcase - A Moment, A Hope, A choice!

4 February 2007
The Market Theatre

34 BWA Members and Guests came together to watch this highly acclaimed play, adapted and directed by James Ngcobo, and based on the short story by Es'kia Mphahlele.

The Suitcase, set in the 1950's and based on an actual event, told the story of a young rural couple who, in spite of family disapproval of their marriage, leave for the city, intended to return wealthy and immune from social censure. The pressures of the city, unemployment and poverty strip away the husband's self-esteem and he starts to lose his moral compass. He is so desperate to provide for his pregnant wife that he stole a suitcase left on a bus.

The audience were vowed by this performance! The performance were followed by snacks and a cocktail at Moyo's Market Theatre.
