EntrepreneurZania Lawrence, ZandC Inferno Security Services t/a Inferno Security Services Zania Cathleen Lawrence embarked on a career in the dominantly male controlled industry of Security with an aim in view to become one of the first, if not the first woman, to take the lead and succeed in all aspects of the industry. Proving not by being prejudice but to pertinently state and prove that a woman by will of drive, ambition, diligence and perseverance can do equally well in the so called “Man’s world”.
Since 1997 Zania Cathleen Lawrence has displayed unequalled quality of professionalism, and by doing so, she was entrusted by the partners/owners of Inferno Security Services cc, (a company well established in its sphere of business) as Managing Member in 2008. Over the years Zania has earned the respect and envy of her male counterparts, employees, business associates and clients. Still in the norm of running a smooth business she creates a sense of closeness/family culture in the business, aiming to maintain a happy working environment. She manages the company well and is involved and has the know how, where and when, from Administration to Operations, right down to the nitty gritty of the business making the company even stronger than it was back then, and a definite force to be reckoned with. Tracy Foulkes, Nomu Brands
Tracy Foulkes began her career as an entrepreneur simply because she makes an awful employee. NoMU was created in December 2000 as an escape route from her previous, highly successful business as an exclusive caterer. Just one year after she released her NoMU range purely as an experiment to test the public’s reaction to the NoMU as a brand, her original concept (to launch her own signature food retail outlet) was shelved as NoMU had rapidly expanded to national distribution and exporting within the first twelve months. NoMU has won numerous awards both local and international for its quality, innovation and design. Tracy now produces more than 78 individual products in 7 different categories and exports to 38 international markets, proving not only what South Africa is capable of but also what our women can achieve too.

After having completed my submission for the BWA nomination one thing struck me. If I look at my years of work, I have always been passionate about leading change and pioneering new projects in whatever community I have been in – be it in maximum security prisons for men and women in Jhb teaching creativity as a rehabilitatory tool, working with young people taken away from their parents by the child protection unit in London, teenage school offenders in Chiawelo, Soweto, emerging leaders at Damelin, teaching creativity to young people in childrens’ homes for the Coalition of Anglican Churches, working to teach artists the language of business, teaching young black entrepreneurs how to negotiate and now with senior and executive leaders trying to continuously find their sense of purpose in the work they do. I believe that if given the opportunity every human being has the power to reinvent themselves and to grow with dignity, insight and hope in the work that they do. I have made it my life’s work to be involved in educational projects that really make a difference to others and find that in this way the work I do is continuously meaningful and rewarding. 2009 was a challenging year to be in education because of all the global budget cuts for training but it was also a year which brought home to me once again that good education can truly change lives. I am proud to work in this space and hope to spend many more years here.

Entrepreneur Clare Schwulst, Inkulu Tyres
Clare Schwulst relocated Inkulu Tyres to the Eastern Cape in 2006. Clare and her team were able to set up and install a retreading factory in three weeks (staff of 8) The challenges were the same as starting a project from scratch; recruiting skilled staff, wooing customers and coping with large distances from the suppliers. Our biggest assets are Brian Schwulst the Production Manager with thirty something years of experience in the industry and our INKULU TEAM. Initially there was some resistance in the market to the new kids on the block and it took a lot of hard work to penetrate a closed market. In 2008 Inkulu Tyres aligned itself with one the the top brands in the tread market namely LEADER RUBBER. The factory was upgraded to increase production of truck and earthmover retreads, improve quality and provide superb service. Today we have a large network of Dealers in East London, Mthatha, Queenstown, Port Elizabeth and the surrounding areas. The success of Inkulu Tyres can be attributed to: THE INKULU TEAM - a happy and balanced group. CUSTOMERS – where the customer is still king. SUPPLIERS – accounts are conducted with integrity and bills paid on time. The purpose of the business is to provide a quality product with safety first, Provide jobs (23), and reduce the carbon footprint on the planet by recycling old tyres , relieving the pressure on landfill sites. Clare’s motto in life is………”do not put off for tomorrow what you can do today – have no regrets”

Tracy Jane King, African Angels Trust
African Angels, formed in 2007, seeks, receives and allocates sponsorship for the education of orphaned and vulnerable children living in rural areas of the Eastern Cape, taking a unique partnership approach with parents, working with two informal settlements in the East Coast Resorts area. I play dual roles of trustee and the initial educator of the Angels, getting them ‘school ready’ for entry into mainstream fee paying schools. We have 31 children sponsored and attending good quality schools. African Angels is a registered tax deductible organization in South African. African Angels retains a maximum of 5% of sponsor contributions to assist with running costs of the organization. Aggressive fund raising has seen us purchase a bus for transport of children, cover ad hoc telephone and internet charges; domain hosting charges and UMAMA club meetings. We are fully aware that as we accept more children into the programme than the logistical requirements increase exponentially, and as such have designed and implemented a short, medium and long term marketing and communication plan to drive funds into the organization. Maintaining a careful balance between expansion and understanding what is required (in fiscal, time, and people aspects) to ensure the project is sustainable is constantly reviewed and assessed.

Nana Mthembu
To attempt to summarize the achievement of this woman in a few paragraphs and lines can and most certainly will prove to be a tremendous exercise in futility. It is incredibly simplistic to assume that her all achievements have and could be documented, as the go way beyond just professional, academic or even financial categories. Her many achievements also include interpersonal relationships that she has nourished and taken the utmost care for, way beyond the call of duty or regular office hours. But for the purpose of this association, an attempt will be made to describe the few most significant features of her life. On the personal front, she is a mother of four sons, but also taking financial and personal care of approximately 4 other nephews and nieces like children of her own. Professionally she is the principal of Isandlwana Technical high School, a school on the outskirts of Gingindlovu which has achieved a 100% pass rate with qt least 85% exemption rate for at least 4 years (since 2006), and eventually being recognised in 2009 by receiving the ‘best school ’ in the Empangeni district award in 2009. She simultaneously is completing her Master’s degree in Public Administration after having completed an honour’s degree in Education and a diploma in public administration. Alongside the, academic achievements and professional commitments, she has found time for extensive charity work, mainly being the founder of the Phumalanga non-profit organisation, which gives various aid and support to Aids orphans and an advocate for womens’ rights. Being a religious woman, she is also a member of the Mothers’ union of the Anglican church. But again with all these many accolades, achievements and commitments. It is her strength of character and interpersonal relationships which set her apart from other people. A person with immense care for people who she has no immediate relation or connection and her ability to inspire those around her to achieve things they believed to be beyond them. Corporate

Social Melanie Grant, iKhaya LikaBaba
Melanie Grant is the Founder and Coordinator of a non profit organization iKhaya LikaBaba which when translated means “The Father’s House” – a home for orphaned and abandoned babies. After losing her daughter to a terminal congenital disease, Melanie found she had developed empathy for children who were not blessed with a family or full life expectancy. Melanie set to work investigating the legalities and logistics required to establish a children’s shelter and after 6 months of intensive research, interviews and exploration had inadvertently produced a business plan which was used to establish a new non profit organization which was formed, registered and operational by March 2008. Believing that she needed to live out the message that she felt called to share, Melanie opened her home to the first 2 abandoned babies in December 2007 drawing on her family’s shared vision for the dream of a home for orphaned and abandoned babies to come to reality.
Early in the life of iKhaya LikaBaba, Melanie innovated a radical approach to orphan care by inviting applications from local and international volunteers to supplement the growing needs for passionate and enthusiastic caregivers. The first international volunteer to arrive was Danie, an enthusiastic 19year old Canadian girl who was a welcome addition to the team. Since then, more than 40 international volunteers have been introduced to the plight of these precious babies through their participation in the program ranging from one month to one year in duration. Key element s that Melanie put into place included enabling volunteers to fundraise their participation and flight costs prior to arrival, orientation to the home and the area, monthly social excursions, regular contact with their sponsors or families and an unintended consequence to the program has been that some of the volunteers have become international spokespeople for the organization helping to create awareness and supply resources for operational and developmental projects. Melanie has embraced the art of delegation through appointing an online volunteer coordinator who is responsible for the United Nations volunteers, who have been assigned to the organization. As a result, Melanie has mastered the art of New Media technology and interacts on a daily basis with a rapidly growing Facebook group and Twitter channel as well as highly visible blog and website which is often referred to as the deciding factor for decisions to volunteer or support the organization.
Melanie has embraced the value of community engagement involving schools, corporate, fellow organizations in the OVC sector and individuals from diverse communities, backgrounds and religious orientations. Practically this has meant groups of students volunteering Saturdays in the babies’ home, individuals donating an hour or two of their time on a weekly basis, and corporate project initiatives which have been instrumental in various building and expansion projects. Mentoring and collaborating with other organisations has not been a requirement of the job, however Melanie has endeavored to share her knowledge and skills and training opportunities with others working in the non profit sector. This has included the establishment of an Orphan Network portal where relevant documentation, which is often hard to find, has been made available. This is an area that Melanie hopes to further develop in the future into a comprehensive data base of stakeholders caring for orphans and vulnerable children. Melanie attends local and regional OVC forums, and other networking opportunities despite the logistical challenges required to do this as the organizations sole administrator. Melanie has been invited to share her knowledge and experience with other ground roots organizations and is planning to host South Africa’s first “Together for Adoption” conference within the next year on behalf of this international organization. The goal of this event will be to unite efforts towards creating a culture of adoption in our nation.
Though her work schedule demands so much of her time, she is currently studying her honours in Psychology through Unisa with a long term vision to be qualified as a counsellor; she is a mother of 4 very busy children and assists her husband with marketing and communication in his business as a Web Coach.
